When we created the Simply Delicious cookbook, we wanted to prove that good food doesn’t have to break the bank. That everyone can enjoy healthy, delicious, easy meals on a budget. Even families with allergies and special dietary requirements. Here are a few of our personal faves that make it super easy to get more flavour and nutritional bang for your buck.
Cheat’s sourdough
What’s more satisfying than the smell and taste of fresh-baked sourdough bread? Making your own at a fraction of the cost you’d pay at the shops. And knowing exactly what ingredients have gone into it! If you’ve ever tried (and not quite succeeded) to make sourdough at home, you’ll love the simplicity of this recipe as much as the savings and the flavour. Unlike traditional sourdough starters, you don’t need to do anything to the starter. Just prepare, cover for three days, and you’re on your way! There’s also enough starter to make two loaves of bread – perfect for a large family or bulk baking to freeze for later in the week. View the Cheats sourdough recipe on Cookidoo.
Chocolate “feed a crowd” cake
Need to feed a small army? Why not give them some classic home baking. This budget-friendly chocolatey dessert takes only 15 mins to prep, and costs less than 10c per serve! It’s a real crowd pleaser, because it’s dairy free, nut free, egg free and vegan too. Want to jazz it up a little? Add fruit and cream, buttercream icing, sprinkles or ganache. It also freezes well in individual portions, making it perfect for lunchboxes and picnics. Winner! View the Chocolate “feed a crowd” cake on Cookidoo.
